Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2.5 cups all-purpose flour For best results, use a kitchen scale.
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder Ensure it is fresh for proper rise.
  • 0.5 teaspoon baking soda Activated with buttermilk.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1.25 cups buttermilk (cold) Keep it cold to enhance flakiness.
  • 0.5 cup butter (cold and shredded or cubed) Vital for flaky texture.

Sweetener

  • 1.5 teaspoons honey or sugar Adjust to taste for sweetness.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Whisk until well mixed.
  • Add the cold, shredded or cubed butter to the flour mixture. Blend it until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Pour in the cold buttermilk and honey or sugar and stir gently until just combined. A few lumps are fine.
  • Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it just a few times.
  • Pat the dough into a rectangle about 1-inch thick. Cut using a biscuit cutter or a drinking glass.

Baking

  • Place the cut biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, ensuring they are close but not touching.
  • Bake for about 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!

Notes

For flaky biscuits, keep ingredients cold and avoid overworking the dough. Explore variations by adding cheese, herbs, or sweet ingredients.
