  • 6 slices bread toasted
  • Cream Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • cups whole milk
  • ½ –1 teaspoon black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of nutmeg optional
  • Pantry Staples / Optional Add-Ins
  • Salt use sparingly, if needed
  • Optional: peas mushrooms, or finely chopped onions

Instructions
 

  • Rinse chipped beef briefly under warm water to reduce excess salt. Pat dry and chop into bite-size pieces.
  • Toast bread slices and keep warm.
  • In a medium skillet or saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.
  • Whisk in flour and cook 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly, until lightly golden.
  • Slowly pour in milk while whisking continuously to prevent lumps.
  • Cook and stir 3–5 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  • Stir in chopped chipped beef, black pepper, and nutmeg if using.
  • Simmer gently 2–3 minutes until heated through.
  • Taste and add salt only if needed.
  • Spoon creamed chipped beef over warm toast and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Always rinse chipped beef—it’s naturally very salty.
  • Add milk gradually for a smooth, lump-free sauce.
  • Sauce thickens as it cools; loosen with milk if needed.
