  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder Use high-quality for best flavor.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk Fresh ingredients recommended.
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot water Carefully mix into batter.

For the Topping

  • 1 batch chocolate frosting For topping the cake.
  • cream filling (optional) For adding filling between layers.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, beat together buttermilk, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  • Carefully stir in the hot water. The batter will be thin.

Baking

  • Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Frosting

  • Once cooled, frost the cake with chocolate frosting and add cream filling if desired.
