Ingredients

Roll Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup blueberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 tablespoon zest of 1 lemon

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon zest of 1 lemon

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • In another bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  • Gently fold in the blueberries and lemon zest, being careful not to crush the berries.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 2-3 minutes until smooth.
  • Roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.

Filling and Baking

  • Brush the surface of the dough with melted butter, sprinkle with extra sugar, and add more lemon zest or cinnamon if desired.
  • Starting from one long edge, roll the dough tightly into a log. Cut the log into 12 equal slices.
  • Place the rolls in a greased baking dish, spacing them closely.
  • Let the rolls rise in a warm area for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the rolls for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.

Frosting and Serving

  • Beat together the cream cheese and softened butter in a bowl until smooth.
  • Gradually add powdered sugar, then mix in lemon juice and zest.
  • Once the rolls have cooled slightly, generously spread the frosting on top and serve warm.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze them for about a month. Thaw at room temperature or microwave before serving.
